To sell merch on Etsy with Printify, you connect Printify to your Etsy shop, design a product in Printify’s mockup generator, publish the listing to Etsy, and let Printify print and ship each order automatically when it sells. You pay nothing up front beyond Etsy’s $0.20 listing fee. Printify only charges you when an order comes in.

Bottom line

  • Printify’s free plan is enough to start — you don’t need Premium until you’re selling enough for the product discount to beat the subscription fee.
  • Your real constraint is Etsy, not Printify: fees take roughly 10-12% of each order before ads, so price accordingly.
  • The first order usually comes from getting the niche and listing tags right, not from a better mockup.

What you need before you start

Three things: an Etsy seller account, a free Printify account, and one design file you have the rights to sell.

Etsy charges a one-time $0.15 setup fee to open a shop in most regions, then $0.20 per listing. Printify’s free plan costs nothing and supports up to five connected stores. You do not need a business entity, a trademark, or a design degree to publish your first listing.

Your design file should be a transparent PNG at 300 DPI, sized to the print area Printify shows you (commonly 4500 x 5400 px for a full-front DTG print). Printify flags low-resolution uploads before you publish, which is the only quality check you get.

One rule that ends more Etsy shops than any other: do not upload fan art, band logos, sports team names, or movie quotes. Etsy removes those listings and suspends repeat offenders, and Printify rejects orders that violate IP policy. Original text, original illustration, or licensed art only.

Step 1: Connect Printify to Etsy

In Printify, go to My Stores → Add new store → Etsy, then authorize the connection through Etsy’s permission screen. It takes about a minute.

Printify then pushes listings into Etsy as drafts or live listings (your choice), and pulls orders back automatically. When a customer buys, Printify charges your saved payment method for the product and shipping, prints the item, and marks the Etsy order shipped with tracking.

If your Etsy shop is brand new and not yet open to the public, connect it anyway — you can publish listings and open the shop afterward.

Step 2: Pick products that suit Etsy buyers

Etsy shoppers browse for gifts and personal items, not bulk apparel. That changes which products are worth listing.

The categories that consistently perform for print-on-demand sellers on Etsy are mugs, tote bags, sweatshirts, framed or unframed art prints, and embroidered hats. Plain unisex tees are the most crowded corner of the platform, so they need a genuinely distinct design to rank.

Inside Printify, every product lists multiple print providers with different base costs, print methods, and production locations. Sort by provider location first: a US-based provider for a US buyer means 3-6 day shipping instead of two weeks, and Etsy’s review system punishes slow delivery hard.

Check the provider’s own stats before you commit. Printify shows average production time and a reliability rating on each provider card. A provider with a sub-90% rating will cost you refunds later.

Step 3: Build the mockup

Upload your PNG in Printify’s design editor, position it inside the safe print area, then generate mockups.

Printify produces flat-lay and model mockups for free, and those are fine to launch with. The one thing worth doing manually: make your first listing image a lifestyle or model shot, not a flat product photo on white. Etsy’s search grid is visual, and a white-background mug photo looks like drop-shipping to buyers who have seen a thousand of them.

Add a second image showing the design close up so buyers can read the text, and a third showing scale or a size chart. That’s the minimum viable listing.

Do not skip the personalization question if your product supports it. Etsy’s own data consistently shows personalized listings convert better, and Printify supports variable text on several product lines.

Step 4: Price it against Etsy’s real fees

Here is where most new sellers lose money. Etsy takes several cuts, and they stack.

Cost What it is Typical amount (US)
Etsy listing fee Charged per listing, renews after a sale or 4 months $0.20
Etsy transaction fee Percentage of item price plus shipping 6.5%
Etsy payment processing Etsy Payments fee in the US 3% + $0.25
Etsy Offsite Ads Charged only on sales that came from Etsy’s external ads 12-15%, capped at $100/order
Printify product cost Base cost + shipping, charged at order time Varies by product and provider
Printify Premium Optional subscription for lower base costs Starts around $25/month

Work a real example. Say a sweatshirt has a base cost plus US shipping in the low-to-mid $20s inside Printify — check the exact figure in the product page, because base costs differ by provider, color, and size. You list it at $44.

Etsy’s transaction fee and payment processing take roughly $3.70 combined. Add the listing fee. Your margin is what’s left after Printify’s charge, and on most sweatshirts at that price point it lands somewhere between $12 and $16.

Now the trap: if that sale came through Offsite Ads at 15%, another $6.60 disappears and your margin halves. Sellers with under $10,000 in sales over the trailing 365 days can opt out of Offsite Ads in shop settings. Sellers above that threshold are enrolled permanently at the reduced 12% rate. Decide deliberately rather than by default.

Two pricing rules that hold up:

  1. Never price below 2x your Printify cost on apparel. Under that, one refund erases several sales.
  2. Build shipping into the item price and offer free shipping. Etsy gives a search visibility preference to US listings that ship free over $35, and buyers abandon carts over shipping lines.

Step 5: Publish, then fix the listing Etsy sees

Publish from Printify to Etsy as a draft, then edit the listing inside Etsy before it goes live. Printify’s auto-generated titles and tags are generic, and Etsy search is where your sale actually comes from.

Rewrite the title so the first 40 characters contain the phrase a buyer would type — “Gardening Sweatshirt for Plant Lovers” beats “Unisex Heavy Blend Crewneck Sweatshirt.” Fill all 13 tags with multi-word phrases, not single words. Pick the most specific category Etsy offers, and set the correct production partner disclosure, which Etsy requires for print-on-demand sellers.

That last point matters. Etsy requires you to declare Printify as a production partner in your shop settings. Undeclared partners are a policy violation, and it takes two minutes to add.

Step 6: Handle the first order

You do nothing. When the sale lands, Printify charges your card, routes the file to the print provider, and syncs tracking to Etsy so the buyer gets notified.

Your only job is order 1-10 quality control: buy one of your own products. A single sample tells you whether the print sits where you think it does, whether the color reads right on that garment, and how the package arrives. That’s worth more than a week of research.

If an item arrives misprinted or damaged, Printify reprints or refunds it at no cost to you when you report it with a photo, generally within 30 days of delivery. Handle the Etsy-side refund yourself and keep the buyer informed — Etsy judges you on response time, not on whose fault it was.

Who should use Printify for Etsy

Printify fits you if you want the widest product catalog and the lowest fixed cost, and you’re willing to vet print providers yourself. The provider network is the whole model: more choice, more variance, more of your judgment required.

Choose Printful instead if you’d rather have one vertically integrated producer with tighter consistency and are fine paying more per unit for it. Our Printify vs Printful comparison breaks down where each one wins, and the Printify review covers catalog and quality in depth.

If you haven’t picked a niche yet, start with how to start a print-on-demand business before you open the shop.

FAQ

Do I need Printify Premium to sell on Etsy?

No. The free plan supports up to five stores and the full catalog. Premium lowers base product costs by up to 20%, so it starts paying for itself once your monthly savings exceed the subscription price — check the current pricing page for the exact figure and run the math on your own order volume.

How long does Printify take to fulfill an Etsy order?

Production typically runs 2-5 business days, then shipping on top of that. Choosing a print provider in the same country as your buyers is the single biggest factor in delivery speed, and Printify shows average production time on every provider card.

Can I use Printify mockups in my Etsy listings?

Yes. Printify’s generated mockups are licensed for use in your own store listings, including Etsy. For better conversion, treat them as your supporting images and lead with the most lifestyle-oriented shot available.

What happens if a customer wants a return?

Etsy holds you responsible for the buyer relationship, so you set and honor your own return policy. Printify covers reprints and refunds for its own defects and shipping damage, but not for buyer’s remorse or wrong-size orders — which is why a clear size chart in your listing images pays for itself.

Start with one listing, not twenty

The sellers who stall are the ones who publish forty products before learning what their audience wants. Publish three, watch which one gets views in Etsy Stats, then build variants around the winner.

Create a free Printify account and connect your Etsy shop — the free plan covers everything in this guide, and your only cost until the first sale is $0.20 per listing.
